Abim church fight ends in public reconciliation

ABIM — A week after a physical confrontation during a church service in Abim District, Local Council II chairperson Innocent Oyoo and Reverend Canon Richard Ongom have reconciled publicly.

The two made peace during a Sunday service at Abim All Saints Church following mediation by the Bishop of North Karamoja Diocese, Rt Rev Simon Akol Aisu.

The incident occurred on September 27 when Oyoo entered the church and sought to address the congregation over security matters.

Oyoo said he was acting on instructions from the area security leadership. However, Rev Canon Ongom disputed the claim, resulting in a heated verbal exchange that later escalated into a fist fight.

The incident was subsequently reported to police, with both men alleging that they had been assaulted.

The Church of Uganda later expressed regret over the incident and called for a thorough investigation, while emphasising the sanctity of the church.

Exactly one week later, the two returned to the same church, where they publicly sought forgiveness and pledged to repair their strained relationship.

Bishop Aisu urged the two to embrace forgiveness and reconciliation, stressing the role of the Church in promoting unity.

“We are asking for forgiveness, remorsefulness and your willingness to walk a new journey,” Bishop Aisu said.

Oyoo told the congregation that he was sorry for what had happened and that a magistrate had advised them to return to the Christians and seek reconciliation.

“Beginning today, I ask you to forgive me. I pledge to work for the church and sacrifice for the church; I request you to forgive us for what happened,” Oyoo said.

He also sought forgiveness from Bishop Aisu, his family, the Christians and Rev Canon Ongom.

Oyoo said he regretted the embarrassment caused to the congregation and those who witnessed the incident, while maintaining that his intention had been to communicate about the security situation.

He pledged to follow the appropriate procedures in future and strengthen his relationship with the Church.

In a symbolic gesture of reconciliation, Rev Canon Ongom welcomed Oyoo back and hugged him in front of the congregation and their families.

Mr Obin Engorok, the NRM chairperson for Abim District, described the reconciliation as a new chapter for the Church and the people of Abim, saying unity was a source of strength.

The reconciliation brings to an end a public dispute that attracted attention after the confrontation during the church service.
